Workshop- works by Matt Klos

October 1st- 30th

“Making paintings from the objects in my studio and the various lights that pervade it is an endless and enjoyable puzzle. My paintings are formalist constructions but the arrangements of objects I paint are often found, rather than arranged. My paintings are of old jars and archaic household objects. Dust often obscures these objects and even when the objects are clearly defined their original purposes may be unintelligible to our generation. In an age when so many answers are at our fingertips through computers and smartphones, I marvel at this disconnection with our recent past.”

Works by Alexander Ramos

September 1st- 30th

For the month of September a selection of works by Alex Ramos will be on view.  Ramos is a self-taught artist specializing in painting realistic still life in acrylic. Using small brushes, careful color selection, and abundant patience, he executes lifelike depictions of things we encounter on a regular basis often without contemplating their details and intricacies.

Alyssa Young- A Look Within

March 1st- 31st

Young merges the abstract and the illustrative, the defined and the whimsical in a flow of ink and paint. The vibrant, layered, and latent compositions find themselves constrained to loose boundaries, while pressing outward and forward to engage each viewer. The mixed media works of engaging icons and mark-making demand close attention in the intimate space assigned for pensive discoveries.

City Blocks and Spaces In Between- works by Jennifer Manzella

June 1st- July 30th

A suite of miniature etchings featuring urban settings in a descriptive yet atmospheric manner by printmaker, Jennifer Manzella.

Suzanne Francis- select works

April 1st- May 30th

My two favorite mediums are Gouache and woodblock. Gouache is a more opaque watercolor with a matt finish and a dense pigment load. Rich velvety colors can be achieved, since gouache can be carefully applied in layers, something that is difficult with watercolor. Wood blocks are wonderfully tactile and graphic. The carving process is much more physical than painting. It is satisfying to muscle an image into being, and enjoyable to carve beautiful curves and lines.

My subject matter and my hanging style are eclectic. I enjoy drawing and painting friends and family, local flora and fauna, and local landscapes. Since I was born and raised in the greater Philadelphia region, I am familiar with a staggering amount of beautiful urban landscapes to try to portray. I want to express the beauty beneath our feet, to acknowledge and love our surroundings.

Ginger del Rey- select works

March 1st- 31st

Select works by Ginger del Rey will be on display in the gallery for the month of March.

Ginger del Rey paints photo-realistic nudes of friends, lovers and women she admires. The process often begins with photographing the subjects then editing on the computer, before oils and gold leaf are applied to canvas. Having spent years focused on the commercial arts, costume design and theatre scene design and mural work del Rey arrived at easel painting to capture and express the female forms in a up close and exciting fashion. Honing her skills while developing a unique style of portraiture in a range of styles from photo-realistic to impressionistic, the paintings reveal an adoration of the inherent feminine beauty. “I mix my love of saturated color with a retro dreamy, sunny, sexy 70’s light.” The aim is to capture the essence of the subject and unveil her secrets. At times she adheres to the original plan exactly, while other times allowing for spontaneous deviation. Texture, hues, saturation and light sources are essential to the composition and development of these works. The details, expressions, and palettes will attract attention and unequivocally demand the viewer to linger long with each figure.

Morgan Craig- select works

January 15- February 28th

Craig is known for large scale works that document adventures into spaces across the globe few know of let alone witness in person, from abandoned warehouses to amusement parks. Luscious paintings that depict in detail the layers of time on surfaces once in use and now forgotten.

Using graphite and gouache seeks to "show foreign worlds and time periods displaying advancements beyond what is plausible." In small formats on paper with exquisite details and radiant colors he "experiments in flowing aesthetic and function, absent of the limitations of subject matter." In this brand new body of work rooted in science fiction Haines seeks to pique the viewers imagination and stretch to new forms in spaces unknown today.

Flora & Fauna featuring works by Julia Johnson

August 1st- 31st

Johnson’s sculptural paper work are elegant, organic forms hand cut, heated, painted and precisely placed. She describes the process as "I explore organic forms with unnatural material. The pieces are made with synthetic paper, manipulated into hardened, bony forms. I create the abstracted forms to juxtapose the unique properties of synthetic paper with the organic subject matter."

Ouroboros- works by Jordan Kressley

May 1st- 29th

For the month of May new works by illustrator Jordan Kressley will be on display in the gallery.

A fairly recent graduate in the field of illustration Kressely has made the wise decision to stick to traditional hands on mediums, quickly and adeptly honing the skills of chalk pastels. In an age of digital content one can drown in these works on paper that have tediously been labored upon are a fresh breath on art. Everything about this young artist’s choices set her apart from the pack. She impresses the viewer with every single work she creates with scale and attention to detail. Kressely creates a fantastical and rich sense of depth and luminosity in her work, where the bright and energetic meet calm of boundless darkness. While referencing the living world around her, she develops exciting compositions with unique narratives that capture the viewer’s attention. Presenting a new series of works that tie in her current interest in flora and fauna that push the boundaries of reality just enough.

Gillian Pokalo- Remnants

March 1st- 31st

In Pokalo’s mixed media artwork it is immediately evident she is carrying the torch of the radical art movements of the early twentieth century to our present day. The compositions balance excitement and harmony, the exposed as well as the cryptic, which pull the attention of the viewer in, to maintain there for dissection and appreciation.

The works are incredibly innovative in their vision and applied techniques of layering materials with recognizable and unrecognizable imagery. Pokalo employs painting, photography, and printmaking techniques in her art making to create an extremely one-of-a-kind result while hitting the mark of intention. Not content with being a one trick pony, she is always looking for new ways to spark the creative direction, seeking the right blend of content and materials that responds to the experience or concept. Pokalo notes she is “influenced by the sociological shift in the communities that were originally built around industry and the remnants of places that no longer exist. I photograph buildings that are in some way imperfect, or have a humble, almost forgotten quality.“ Striking contrasts of values and dynamic arrangements will pull you through the body of work, then inevitably you will want to revisit each piece for further investigation.

Cadence

In cycling and running one learns to develop a cadence, a steady rhythm in motion, all moving parts and determination in synch to see keep at the task and all the way to the end. The consistent rhythm becomes meditative, as one settles into a oneness, despite possible difficulties, but all such extraneous distractions drift away and are kept at bay. It’s not always about speed, but a consistency and the achievement of the desired goal.  There is a peace found in the time spent outdoors as one seemingly flies through space, a harmony the body all together in unison.

Our shared experience in the Covid-19 shutdown has dramatically increased some peoples concerns, anxiety, and stress, but also involvement in home life and community. For some there was a slowing down of socializing, productivity, and personal care, while others embraced the calm allowed for personal care of the mind, body, and soul, able to smell the blooming roses and take up backyard bird watching. Our “normal” patterns and movements greatly altered and new routines have been adopted as a result of the forced recalibration.

The impetuous was initially the kinetic activities, accessories, and surroundings but much has changed for us in the first half of the year and the concept seems to lend to embracing a wider notion of steady keeping at it.

Shared Edges- The Art of Paper Design: Featuring works by Jason Koons.

Historically the art and craft of decorative works made by cut paper spans many cultures and eras, from Eastern Europe to China and even Latin America. Paper cutting came to North America with German immigrants via Pennsylvania, but modern day artists site a variety of influences that led them to the process. It evokes a memory for many in the States of a silhouette of a family members profile, perhaps from a German, Polish, or Jewish ancestor’s collection or a souvenir cherished from trip to an Amish festival. This practice ignited a spark in modern creatives, truly a renaissance with a wide variety of subjects and results. It is true that computers can easily cut and laser a range of materials to make complex designs by the hundreds. But what is always going to be more extraordinary is the patience and forte of an individual, working by hand. Paper cutting has been taken up as the principal focus for a new wave of artisans, and they are breathing vivacity to crafts. Our region boasts some astonishing talent and they lead the way within the modern movement, returning the craft to decorating people’s homes today.

Dating back as early as 100 CE in China, paper cutting began as a decorative folk tradition focusing on landscape and floral motifs. Moving to Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, the practice evolved as a cheaper alternative than woodcarvings for home decoration. Paper cutting arrived in North America with an influx of German and Dutch immigrants in the 19th century, and took hold in Pennsylvania.

Our Arts Community Relief- A show and sale focused on safeguarding artists' livelihoods for a brighter tomorrow

May 1st- June 30th

In response to the downturn this and every region inevitably faces Black Moth felt it had to attempt to do something to help with the resources it has. We quickly developed an exhibition exclusively featuring works by local artists to help them put their art out there to the public and in hopes to find a new collector or two. We only have a narrow window in the year’s schedule that we could adjust and fit this in to and as assistance programs lag behind its clear that people need funds now and not more claims of help later. In reaching out to some of the terrific talent here in the Greater Philadelphia Region a number of artists responded emphatically as would be expected.

Art is our life and our lives need some significant support these days. These stressful times may dampen our spirits but it certainly won’t stop us from creating. The past has shown us in difficult economic periods some of the most impacted are the arts and similar luxuries, albeit valuable components in society. Already people have lost their jobs, are desperate for assistance, and are concerned for their futures. Those of us not on salaries feel that kind of pressure through most of each year, hoping for the next exhibition and festival to earn a living. With events cut short, cancelled, and postponed the immediate future has been disruptive and disappointing, while one can imagine the rest of the year may not seem so promising either. This impromptu group exhibition is to bolster attention, to recognize and support local artists, with an immediate opportunity for sales. Art being a universal language, in that it transcends the spoken and written words, it communicates concepts, actions, and feelings to viewers proves it has value to all people. It portrays a time and place of a culture and society, reflecting the notions of past, present, and future, their values, accomplishments, hardships, and histories. It can portray an individual’s and/or group’s aesthetics and appreciations, which are equally fundamental as entertainment as well as for tranquility of mind and spirit.

The arts keep life interesting, particularly for those that practice it, but for those that willingly as well as accidentally encounter it. Public works or private made visible to passersby add vibrancy to the environments we inhabit.

Supporting the arts shouldn’t just a slogan the marketing heads slap on every campaign, but a reality for all to believe and engage in.

Rita Siemienski Smith

February 1st- 29th

Rita Siemienski Smith creates landscapes that are activated in their layers and layered marks while the palette calms and grounds the scene. This approach pulls the viewer into the environment for further discovery.

“Contemporary life can be recorded as angry, vulgar or obscene. I choose to relate to and be inspired by the peaceful, beautiful and spiritual qualities of man and nature.
Nature, abstracted or suggested appears as subject matter in many of my paintings. Landscapes, waterways and linear sketches drawn while traveling become idea references. Imagination alone with inspiration and invention produce the painting while intuition completes the process.“

These beautiful abstract landscapes are lush and exciting interruptions of the splendor around us and in our psyche.

Manipulations- Greg Gardner

January 2nd-31st

Gardner creates dynamic, tantalizing, and bewildering compositions with subjects. These framed and signed prints are rich in color and detail, and at 16"x 24" they truly command the space they hold. "I love the purity of traditional photography and strive to shoot the best images I can in camera, however the manipulations that are possible with digital photography intrigue me endlessly. I like to explore how this medium can become fine art used to express thoughts, emotions and dreams. The concept of the “Divine Feminine” is ever present and powers many of my visions."

Labor of Love- works by Jeff Schaller

September 1st – 30th

For the month of September Black Moth will feature select works by local mixed media artist, Jeff Schaller. Drawing from decades of pop culture and advertising styles and techniques Schaller creates some playful, exciting and provocative collages. "I paint in the unique medium of encaustic, creating textural art pieces which incorporate representational form with the printed word. In essence, the visual and written symbols merge to create a unique aesthetic language that is both provocative and whimsical. My multiple-image pieces, with images ranging from polka dots to popular culture, evoke emotions and memories in the viewer. The combination of images tells a story and provokes a personal exchange between the art and the audience."

Inhabited

May 1st – June 30th

The exhibition will showcase a range of styles and perspective on the theme of the landscape, from the natural to the man-made and fantastical. Inhabited encompasses the natural landscape that is home to and beaming with creatures, including our own, who value and depend on the cycles and roles each component plays. The works of art that celebrate the spaces we find joy in our activities, respite, memories, aspirations, and resources from help the viewers appreciate the precious surroundings we all too often breeze past. The subject of the landscape has remainder a favorite to visionaries and collectors alike for centuries partly because of the symbiosis between humans and nature, for the romantic aesthetics and vital necessity. Sometimes the commonplace and quiet spaces need to be elevated with a spotlight shining on it, and that is where the creativity and talent of the artist comes in to serve.

re-faced- works by Wendee Yudis

April 1st- 30th

Wendee Yudis is a serigraph mixed media artist whose paintings and prints have been exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries in NYC, Chicago, and Philadelphia since the mid-1990’s. The females in her work become icons that reoccur in new contexts and combinations to create a visual vocabulary. Many times they question the females’ role in society as well explore the various roles within ourselves. By juxtaposing various images, nuances are implied and tension is created to imply and explore new meanings. I primarily use printmaking along with painting rather than printing in edition because it allows her more freedom to create spontaneously and to explore the subtleties of printmaking. Yudis typically print images or icons in combination with other images to create not only a dialogue between the images but also to create an illusion of being camouflaged by translucency, patterns, and layers to explore relationships seen and unseen.

David Jablow- Further Adventures

March 1st- 31st

Philadelphia artist, David Jablow collects and meticulously completes the compositions on obscure and somewhat risqué novelty note pads from the mid-20th century. Jablow's vision and creativity holds no bars on the possibilities of characters and scenarios. Fully developed stories evolve from a very simple suggestion of a female form. Its clever, captivating, hilarious, albeit impressive how much an artist like Jablow can develop for these damsels and heroines in such a small amount of space.

"Giving new life to objects left for dead is fun, quirky, and often times environmentally considerate. What I’m doing with these old sheets of paper is ‘purposing’ them. I’m doing exactly what the printers had in mind when they originally produced and distributed them. I like the idea that I’m doing this decades after they were made, after they’ve been sitting in drawers until someone decided to post them for sale on eBay or Etsy.

When artist’s face a complete blank canvas or paper, they face that paradoxical problem of endless possibilities. Too many options can often be constraining.
I sidestep this with the help of my muse. I simply access that part of the brain that we use when we play the game of charades. “What could she be doing.” my mind asks. Ideas then flow. I mentally sift through them and make loose sketches to narrow down the options. Which would make a drawing that I’d want to make? What haven’t I done before? Maybe something funny, maybe macabre, or maybe I feel like challenging myself with some complex perspective angle. I get to draw it all; foliage, animals, technology, different eras of human history. That’s half the fun. It’s always the same challenge and always new and different.”

Mark Price- ROI, Real-time Or Instead

February 6th- 28th

New and recent silkscreen printed collage works from artist Mark Price. A collection of Price’s collage works from 2014 - 2018. Engaged with the silkscreen printing collage processes over the past ten years Price utilizes a self produced archive of printed imagery including optical patterns, found graphics, and gradient color fields that collage into rich and frenetic two dimensional compositions. The works explore where our psychological and information architecture become one. The resulting compositions operate as high-resolution experiences that attempt to map out a mediation of internalized and externalized information flows. The compositions address the possibility of a static image of today that encompasses our multi-modal experience with an ever expanding built environment.

Recently relocating back to the Philadelphia area from Portland, Maine this will be Price’s first exhibition in the area since showing his collage works in 2016 at Gallery 543 located at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia. Mark Price is a graphic artist who uses the silkscreen printing process to produce 2-D and 3-D visual works.  Working with gallery director Christina Ray he has mounted three New York solo exhibitions including ‘The New Real Fantasy Now’ 2009, ’Designer Endgame Strategies’ 2010, and ‘Hyper 20XX’ 2012. Additionally his work has been featured in group exhibitions at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. In 2009 his work was selected by curator Aaron Betsky for inclusion in the internationally recognized Confines exhibition at the Institut Valencia d’Art Modern.

City Between Two Rivers- Woodblock Prints by Jennifer Manzella

January 2nd – Jan 30th,  2019

This latest series of prints presents inverted skylines that depict remnants of industry and architecture along the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers in Philadelphia and along the riverways in New York City. This particular series of multiple wood block prints represent the human desire to reconstruct the environment, especially in cities. These altered urban landscapes are evidence of the actions to transform, destroy, and exploit what was there before. Colorful overlapping silhouettes form inverted skylines depict remnants of industry and architecture on the waterways of Philadelphia, inspired by the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers in Philadelphia as well as the New York City river ways.

Poisons and Antidotes

September 4th- October 28th

Some energies shroud in the shadows while some shine strong and brightly, such are the forces that push and pull amongst us. From toxic foes to altruistic Samaritans, we are surrounded by other’s motives, left to our own volition in the aftermath. It is up to us to wither under, thrive on, possibly even pass along. With personal reflection, what side of the line do we stand on, with the healers and do-gooders or with the cruel and mischievous?

Poisons and Antidotes present the duality of the damages and the remedies. A collection of artist portrayals of malicious intents and selfless healers throughout history, in the myths, as well in our contemporary times.  From symbols to epic stories to iconic embodiments of the deeper workings within the human spirit and the physical. The rain can heal and nourish some, while others writhe in pain.

Papercutting by Jessi Brown and Casey Lynch

July 3rd - August 31st

Dating back as early as 100 CE in China, paper cutting began as a decorative folk tradition focusing on landscape and floral motifs. Moving to Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, the craft evolved as a cheaper alternative than woodcarvings for home decoration with its height. Paper cutting arrived in the States with an influx of German and Dutch immigrants in the 19th century, and took hold in Pennsylvania. The practice is experiencing a resurgence with a contemporary reinterpretation and rising popularity among young talents. Artists Casey Lynch and Jessi Brown engage in the dialogue of present day paper cutting, by remixing old subject matter and techniques while pushing the art form forward with innovative styles and themes. Casey Lynch, a paper cutter from South Jersey, focuses on paper cutting’s narrative potential and fantastical qualities. On the other hand, Jessi Brown, working out of Gladwyne, explores paper’s expressive potential while also speaking to the process’s tradition. The coexistence of Brown’s traditional silhouettes, original compositions, and expressive portraiture speak to the modern practice of paper cutting which quotes is history but elaborates on its potential.

Garden of Illumination works by Marilyn Foehrenbach

June 1st- 30th

Illustrator Marilyn Foehrenbach brings the beauty of nature through her art for others to re-imagine and enjoy. Having a wide range of illustration and design experience which she employees to capably manifest unique narratives. As a preferential calling, Foehrenbach continually refers to the infinite splendor of our world’s flora and fauna for subject matter and compositional elements. In a modern society fixated on devices and narcissism, the artist here feels charged with the mission to remind viewers of the nuances both amongst us and far out of reach; at least until we decide to venture from our comfort zones and explore the great world Foehrenbach has re-presented. By way of a “fantastical, tribute to scientific illustration” and symbolism the artist creates captivating, proficient, and fun works of art for everyone to enjoy.

Controlled by Desire- Steve Martin

April 1-30th

These paintings explore ideas of our world where violence and illicit sex are strong negative forces at work on us all, from our youth to old age.  These forces build momentum and work down our tolerance regarding socially acceptable acts and images, powering the roller coaster of life as Martin recognizes it.

This series is dealing with ideas of temptation and the struggle for discipline in one's intimate surroundings and our greater global environment; popular social ills, such looming shadows as lust and violence, as well other powerful influences that one must work against in the following of a higher conscious path.

"I am using objects familiar and available to me; enhancing, complimenting, and juxtaposing objects in my life or those close to me, and allowing the development of the ideas instinctively."  Using Super Soakers, military grenades and helmets, video game controllers, guns, and masks to address aggression, homogony, and influence to a world completely dominated by such.

Intimate Grouping- Paintings by Keith R Breitfeller

March 1st- 31st

Internationally shown and collected painter, Keith Breitfeller has honed in on techniques of mark making and color theory that are striking while pensive. Breitfeller's paintings are contemplative color fields built by heavily textured brush strokes, applied layer upon layer. Clarity and intent intensify as the layers build upon each other while almost completely obscuring most of the work previously assembled. Shifts in the pigment’s temperature and tone lead the viewer through a ruminative phase while commanding the larger space the art inhabits. These paintings calm and introspective nature are partly due to a muted palette transitioning into a vibrant swatch that subtly descends within its confines. The artist has mastered his method as well as provided a respite for the over stimulated surroundings we are each constantly tapped into.

Steve Martin- Large and in Charge

January 1st- February 30th

Inspired by the visual vocabularies of urban design and decay, graphic design and illustrative tattoo art, Martin allows these sources to infuse the work with both a psychological and visual vibrancy. These large scale pieces are characterized by spontaneous mark making, layering, and dynamic composition. Martin utilizes many of the materials and techniques characteristic of street art, remnant of his shadowy aerosol conquests. Emulative of Action Painting, the base of the works are playful with dynamic energy, while foreboding undertones stamp the surfaces. Working in a method of automatism, the subconscious allows to define the process and outcome.

Magnifica Terra

September 4th- October 27th.

The exhibition will showcase artists appreciations and interpretations of our awe-inspiring surroundings, both natural and man-made. The landscape as a subject for painters has been long standing favorite. For some it is the engaging experience on being surrounded by their muse, for others it is a longing for a distant place while diligently working in a controlled space. Paintings of the space we inhabit and have yet to visit speak volumes to the relationship we have with the greater world, it’s humbling while intimate. We are part of something synergistic, a cycle, a constant change. Part of the greatness of capturing a scene is that it is eternally secured, now a moment in time encapsulated and celebrated for others to enjoy beyond that which happened just once. This collection of works give a not only an appreciation for the skill and talents of the artists but an opportunity for the viewers to look through a unique lens at something glorious and yet often taken for granted.

Informally Acquainted

May 9th- June 27th, 2017

A group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity, body type acceptance, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques, artists evince their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms, albeit infinitely unique.

These modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being, stilled and eternalized, sometimes celebrated. A story is told, energy is felt, and technical skills are admired. The intimacy of engaging a portrait or figure painting will always be reflective, enticing, and esteemed, from the experience the of artist to that of the viewer.
